In the traditional teachings of the Buddha, the body is the first foundation of awareness. Breathing is the constant activity of our bodies. Grounded in the breathing body, we can calm our fears, craving, and anger. A...

We'll sit for thirty minutes, explore how to walk a path that leads to freedom from the suffering created by reactive patterns, and sit for another thirty minutes. This may be the first of a few week's discussion on the eightfold path. We emphasiz...
We're continuing a four-week study on the Four Noble Truths. We seek to apply the truths as tools to change how we understand and experience our lives rather than as a simple creed.
This week we'll explore how to end suffering.

Have you read the interview with Stephen Batchelor that Ann posted under "notes?" Also, listen to the podcasts (under music) that we have from Batchelor (via Ann of New Zealand!) I can burn them to cd for you if you'd like to listen to them on the go. I think you'd really appreciate his depth of understanding and also the practical approach he takes.
Also, look at the note of Ken's post on "Concentration is what we do to oranges."
Hi Kenya. I wanted you to know that we'll be meeting at Pho Asian Noodles for dinner at 5:15 p.m. tonight. It's a great restaurant across from Half Price Books on Lane (in an old Taco Bell). We'll meet there and then go to the center at 6 to be ready for the Probing Presence explanation.
I had a thought about Sunday's meeting. Ken places a strong emphasis on working through patterns of emotional reactivity as a way to presence. He found that people could practice for years without much transformation until they moved into their emotional patterns. BUT, simply talking about them is NOT the same as actually working through them, though it can be an important first step. It's about experiencing the underlying feeling fully, in attention. Once it's been fully experienced, it usually "completes its purpose for being," and dissipates.
The group environment can be tricky sometimes. We try to be upfront about issues we might be working on. We do so to be honest and not escapist about our practice. But at the same time, we do so to begin to see that all emotions, even the strongest ones, are simply movements of the mind. When we see them that way, we can begin to experience them without being overwhelmed by them or by acting them out. We begin to increasingly stay present with whatever arises. And this brings compassion for others who are struggling too.
Hey Kenya. Thanks for coming to practice with us last night. I enjoyed meeting you. You seemed very intuitive! Let me know if you have any questions about the group. We're in the process of evolution now....of course life is always evolving, isn't it? :) If you stop by Sunday, we're just finishing up chapter 1 from the book....
